Route 151 / Route 250 Roundabout

Wallace Montgomery is the Lead Designer for VDOT’s Albemarle Bundle Design-Build project which includes converting the existing 3-leg intersection of Routes 151 and 250 into a roundabout.

During the early stages of construction, several runaway trucks lost their brakes coming down Afton Mountain and entered the work zone. Thankfully, nobody was injured. WM coordinated with VDOT and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to implement a solution that warns construction personnel about potential runaway trucks. Advanced detection systems were installed prior to the project site that communicate with Connected Smart Vests that are worn by construction personnel. The vests vibrate when a runaway truck is detected so workers can get to a safe place before the truck enters the work zone.
