May, 2015 – Zion Crossroads Wins Award

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s first diverging diamond interchange project has won a merit award from the Design-Build Institute of America Mid-Atlantic Region for the project’s contractor. The Virginia DOT chose the diverging diamond design for the Zion Crossroads Interchange at I-64 and US 15 in Louisa County to enhance safety and capacity. The project was completed in April 2014 on time and under budget.

At the Alternate Technical Concept stage, Wallace Montgomery developed an ATC that was approved by VDOT, which simplified the DDI further, improving operations and safety at an even lower construction cost. The Corman/Parsons Team, of which WM was a key subconsultant, won the design/build contract based on a combination of the lowest cost and best technical rating. WM assisted the team in revising the IMR based on the ATC for FHWA approval. WM also assisted on the specific geometric and traffic aspects of the DDI to produce the safest and most efficient DDI possible.
